Ebook About From the New York Times bestselling author of Adulting comes a story about how to make something when you’re capable of nothing. Kelly Williams Brown had 700 Bad Days. Her marriage collapsed, she broke three limbs in separate and unrelated incidents, her father was diagnosed with cancer, and she fell into a deep depression that ended in what could delicately be referred to as a “rest cure” at an inpatient facility. Before that, she had several very good years: she wrote a bestselling book, spoke at NASA, had a beautiful wedding, and inspired hundreds of thousands of readers to live as grown-ups in an often-screwed-up world, though these accomplishments mostly just made her feel fraudulent. One of the few things that kept her moving forward was, improbably, crafting. Not Martha Stewart–perfect crafting, either—what could be called “simple,” “accessible” or, perhaps, “rustic” creations were the joy and accomplishments she found in her worst days. To craft is to set things right in the littlest of ways; no matter how disconnected you feel, you can still fold a tiny paper star, and that’s not nothing. In Easy Crafts for the Insane, crafting tutorials serve as the backdrop of a life dissolved, then glued back together. Surprising, humane, and utterly unforgettable, this is a poignant and hysterical look at the unexpected, messy coping mechanisms we use to find ourselves again.Book Easy Crafts for the Insane: A Mostly Funny Memoir of Mental Illness and Making Things Review :
This book is fantastic! Kelly opens the curtain to her own personal struggles with mental illness (and physical injury too) and in doing so is helping to open up the conversation around mental illness. This is not light reading but it is "I must read on to find out what happens" reading. I became very invested in Kelly's journey as I read this book. The crafts and Kelly's good humor make a nice space to breathe and absorb both her story and her reflections on what she's been through. I think this book has some really amazing timing given how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted most people's mental health and has had many more people reflecting on their mental well being. (Not to mention all the crafting many of us did during lock downs and when we couldn't socialize.) Give it a shot, whether you've experienced what she's been through or not, you'll likely find yourself learning some important lessons (or at least becoming even more compassionate toward those who experience all types of hardships) and a few crafts too along the way. Amazon Prime delivered the new Kelly Williams Brown book today. I’ve been reading it ever since. It’s gripping and quite dark in one chapter, but funny throughout. Her narrative is a brave and honest comic confessional of events in a particularly bad two years. And she teaches crafts, too! You should get a copy.
